Is There a Cure for Morning Sickness?

A cure for morning sickness is the most hoped for thing for any woman who has ever experienced the misery of nausea and vomiting during her pregnancy. Due to the fact that the exact cause of morning sickness is not known, there isn't a single cure that will work for every woman. However, there are several different types of cures that can be used to alleviate the intensity of the symptoms, if not eliminate them all together.  Typically these will help most women, but if you are one of the few unfortunate ones, relief may not come until you give birth.

A change in diet is one of the easiest steps to take and may help most. Pregnant women tend to feel worse after eating foods that are particularly greasy or spicy and therefore those types of foods should be avoided. Good food choices include items that are bland and are high in protein.

It is thought that when a woman becomes pregnant, her digestion changes. Food tends to get metabolized a little faster and so eating more often is important. A full stomach will make nausea worse though, so several small meals are in order. Avoid drinking liquids with food also, as it can make you feel worse.

Lastly, a pregnant woman has an intense sense of smell that can be a curse. Smells that may have never bothered you before may send you running for the bathroom. Keep your enviroment well ventilated and avoid smells that are offensive to you. You may even want to keep a pleasant smell nearby - like peppermint or spearmint - to fight off a case of the gags.

How to Find Your Own Cure for Morning Sickness

Now that you know some of the areas that you can change in your life to help relieve your morning sickness, you'll need to find specific ways to change.  Although you may not find your perfect cure, you will hopefully be able to use some trial and error to come up with something to make it more bearable.

Good food choices that are bland include saltine crackers, plain toast, bananas, plain rice, applesauce, clear broth, lemon-lime soda (drink slowly), and jello.  And since you may not be eating as much food, it's important to eat some of the following foods which are high in protein: peanut butter, eggs, beans and chicken.  When not feeling well, a great meal could be something like chicken and rice.

Pay attention to the time of day that you feel the worst and see what is going on during that time that can be eliminated.  If you feel the worst in the morning, eating before you get up could be a good solution.  If you feel worst in the afternoon, you may need to eat more or take a nap.  If you feel worst in the evening, definitely get more rest and increase your food intake.  Above all, make sure you are consuming enough fluids, because even the slightest dehydration will cause nausea.

Lastly, look at the situations where you feel bad.  Do you get sick when you brush your teeth, change a diaper, cook dinner or when you're out and about?  You may need to find a new toothpaste, have someone else change diapers, turn on your exhaust fan while cooking, or take several breaks when outside the home.

While there really is no single thing you can do to cure your morning sickness, making a combination of changes can really help.  And don't be surprised if something that works one week stops working the next week - it's very common for that to happen.  Above all, remember that morning sickness doesn't last forever and try getting through just one day at a time.
